Are Jacob and Israel the same person in the Quran?

Question:
Do we have any Quranic confirmation that prophet Jacob was also called Israel?

Reply:
The question of whether prophet Jacob was also known as Israel is resolved in the Quran. The confirmation is derived from a number of Quranic verses which, when studied together, confirm that Jacob and Israel are the same person.

First:

Those are some of the prophets whom God has blessed from the descendants of Adam, and from those We carried with Noah, and from the progeny of Abraham and Israel, and from those whom We guided and chose. When the revelations of the Almighty were recited to them, they fell prostrating and weeping.
19:58

In 19:58, God speaks about
"some of the prophets" and their "descendants" and " progeny".
God mentions the descendants and progeny of Adam, Noah, Abraham and Israel. The words descendants and progeny are used for people and not places. This confirms that Israel in this verse is a name of a prophet and not a place/country.

Second:

We split them up into twelve tribal communities
, and We inspired Moses when his people asked him for water, "Strike the rock with your staff," wherefrom twelve springs gushed out. Each people knew their own drinking place, and We shaded them with clouds, and We brought down upon them manna and quails: "Eat from the good which We have provided you with." They did not wrong Us, but they were wronging themselves. 7:160

We find the words
"mana and quails" in 7:160 also mentioned in 20:80:

O Children of Israel, We saved you from your enemy and We made an appointment with you at the right side of the mount, and We brought down upon you the manna and the quails.
20:80

The common factor between verses 7:160 and 20:80 are the words
"mana and quails".
The receivers of the "mana and quails" are the "twelve tribal communities" (7:160).
The receivers of the "mana and quails" are the "Children of Israel" (20:80).
Therefore the Children of Israel and the twelve tribal communities are the same people.
Israel the prophet had 12 sons from whom came the 12 tribes of Israel.

As for the link between Jacob and Israel, it can be derived from the following verses:

When Joseph said to his father, "O my father, I saw eleven planets, the sun and the moon, I saw them prostrating to me," 12:4

He raised his parents upon the throne. They fell prostrate before him. He said, "O my father, this is the interpretation of my vision of old. My Lord has made it come true. He has been good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you out of the desert after the devil had driven a wedge between me and my brothers. My Lord is Gentle in what He wills. He is the Knowledgeable, the Wise.
12:100

When they (the brothers) entered from where their father instructed them, it was not to avail them in any way against God, other than it being for a need which Jacob kept in himself and which he fulfilled, for he possessed certain knowledge that We taught him, but most people do not know.
12:68

From the above verses in Sura 12, we derive:
1- Joseph had 11 brothers (12:4).
2- Jacob was the father of the 12 brothers (12:68).
3- Once again, the 12 brothers were 12 sons of Israel.

Third:

Additional Quranic confirmation that Jacob and Israel are the same person is found in the following two verses:

The progeny of Abraham and Israel
" 19:58.

And I (Joseph) have followed the creed of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It is not for us to associate anything with God. That is from God's favour upon us and upon the people, but most people do not give thanks.
12:38

In both verses, when God spoke of descendents, both Israel and Jacob are mentioned immediately after Abraham.

To conclude, the 12 sons of Israel, who formed the 12 tribes, were the 12 sons of Jacob. Israel and Jacob were the same person.
