Order of revelation

We are told that the Quran was not revealed in the order it is compiled today. Is that correct? Apart from any evidence which may be found in hadith, do we have any Quranic evidence for that? Thank you.

That is correct, the Quran we have today is not compiled in the same sequence of its revelation. The prophet was given clear instructions of the order in which the Quran is to be compiled. This information given to the prophet was part of the revelation he received.
Prophet Muhammad was given the following instruction from God about the compilation of the Quran:

Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it.
Indeed, upon Us is its collection and its recitation.
Once We recite it, you shall follow such a recitation.
Then upon Us is its explanation. 75:16-19

These words are clear and they tell us that Muhammad received clear instructions as to how the Quran should be compiled and also recited, and that he should follow these instructions.
